Gender Recognition and Lived Name Policy

The Office of the Registrar and Student Information Systems are implementing the UC Presidential Policy on Gender Recognition and Lived Name (GRLN) to ensure that members of the UCSF community are identified by their accurate gender identity and lived names. (Lived names may be described in some electronic systems as preferred names.)  For the latest updates and news on policy implementation, please visit the GRLN website.

Gender Recognition

Students already have the option to update their gender, pronouns, sexual orientation, and gender identity on the "My Profile" tab in the student portal. Detailed information is available about the confidentiality of information on the "My Profile" tab.

Lived Names

Students already can choose a lived first name on the "My Profile" tab in the student portal.  (The lived name field currently is described as preferred first name.)  Planned changes, once implemented, will allow students to choose lived first, middle, and last names.  With some exceptions, lived names will be the names that display for students in various campus systems.  Students also will be able to select a name to appear on their diploma.  Since legal names may remain important for transcripts, students will be able to choose whether their legal name or their lived name should appear in a particular transcript order.

Consistent with UC policy, these changes likely will be implemented in phases, with completion expected by June 30, 2024.  In the meantime, students who have special requests should contact the Office of the Registrar so we can explore using existing system functionality to accommodate those requests.
