Grading Types

Provisional Grades

I, E, Y, and NP

After you complete course requirements, your course’s Instructor of Record will update your provisional grade to a final grade. You do not need to take any action. If a delay or urgency arises, you can contact your instructor directly or send a grade request to the instructor from the study list page in the student portal. [Note: For the School of Pharmacy, NP is a final grade.]

In-Progress Grades

UP (Unsatisfactory Progress)

UP grades (used by the School of Dentistry) remain on a student’s transcript until the course sequence concludes with a final grade.

UP grades are not changed prior to the conclusion of the course (even if subsequent quarters are graded SP).

If a student passes the course, all UP grades are automatically converted to SP grades within 24 hours of submission of a passing final grade by the Instructor of Record. If the student does not pass the course, the UP grades remain on the transcript.

IP (In Progress)

The IP grade is a placeholder grade for courses extending beyond one quarter, and for MD students in longitudinal programs.

IP grades are converted to final grades after the course sequence concludes with a final grade.
