Provisional Grades
The following grades are considered provisional:
- I – Incomplete
- E – Non Passing
- Y – Ongoing course work
- NP – Not Passed
After a provisional grade is submitted for a course, the student should not register in the same course a second time. These grades may be replaced with final grades once course requirements have been completed. Please see Grade Change procedures.
Students may request that instructors submit final grades.
All grade changes are made in the Faculty Portal. Students no longer submit petitions for grade changes (effective July 2019).
In-Progress Grades
Some courses, appropriately called In-Progress courses, extend beyond a single academic term. Although final grades are not entered until the concluding quarter, interim grades should still be entered during each quarter of the course sequence.
IP – In Progress
The grade of IP is a placeholder grade for courses extending beyond one quarter.
In most cases, IP grades are converted to the final grade after the course sequence concludes with a final grade; this happens automatically within 24 hours of submission of a passing final grade. For School of Medicine courses that are taken longitudinally, the Instructor of Record will manage conversions via the faculty portal.
UP – Unsatisfactory Progress
UP grades (used by the School of Dentistry) remain on a student’s transcript until the course sequence concludes with a final grade. UP grades are automatically converted to SP (Satisfactory Progress) within 24 hours of submission of a passing final grade.
Invalid Grades
In rare cases, instructors may accidentally submit an invalid grade.
Examples include:
- entering IP instead of P
- submitting grades for the wrong academic term
Invalid grades can be corrected through the Faculty Portal by the instructor of record or approved grading delegate. Please see Grade Change procedures.
